Colours on water, unique impressions on paper. A traditional Turkish art in which pigments are floated on prepared water and lifted onto paper — no two pieces can ever be repeated.

Ebru is a traditional Turkish art in which colours are shaped on the surface of specially prepared water and then transferred onto paper or other materials. Because every composition is influenced by the movement of the water, the colours and the artist’s own touch, each work is entirely unique.
It was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014. Across this programme you will work through both the traditional techniques and their more creative, seasonal applications.

Introduction to Ebru
Discover the materials, learn how colours behave on the water’s surface, and understand the principles behind making a pattern. You will leave with your own first pieces.
October
Patterns, movement and tradition
Shaping and directing the pattern. Using combs, styluses and other tools to draw rhythmic, spiral and flowing compositions — the same technique, a different result every time.
November
Your own compositions
From technique towards expression. Combining what you have learned into your own palettes and forms, and seeing how Ebru moves beyond paper onto textile, ceramic, glass and wood.
December · special
Christmas & New Year edition
Traditional art meets the festive season. Make marbled ornaments and decorative objects — handmade seasonal decorations, or personal gifts. Suitable for families.

Christmas & New Year special — the date may fall outside the usual monthly pattern.
Beyond December: depending on interest and the wider programme, Ebru workshops may continue from January through June. MKD reserves the right to change dates or the programme in exceptional or unforeseen circumstances, and participants will be informed in advance.
What to expect
on the evening
The sessions run as a workshop rather than a lecture. The focus stays on the basic techniques of the art, and everyone works at the tray.
Two hours, start to finish
Every workshop runs from 17:00 to 19:00, with time to make several pieces.
Eight people at most
A small group means room at the water and individual guidance throughout.
No experience needed
The programme concentrates on fundamentals. Complete beginners are welcome.
Turkish tea is served
Çay throughout the session — the art and the hospitality belong together.
Take your work home
Every participant leaves with their own original pieces at the end of the evening.
Payment at the office
Fees are settled at the MKD office, Rimska cesta 2b.

Before you book
Do I need any experience?
None at all. The programme concentrates on the basic techniques of Ebru and every session is designed so a complete beginner can take part. A single piece takes only a few minutes to make, and you will make several across the two hours.
When and where do the workshops take place?
On the second Monday of each month, from 17:00 to 19:00, at Rimska cesta 2b, 1000 Ljubljana. The planned dates are 14 September, 12 October and 9 November 2026. The December workshop is a special Christmas and New Year edition and its date may differ; it will be announced in advance.
How much does it cost?
€12 per person per workshop, or €40 for a package of four. Material costs are not included in the fee. Payments are issued at the MKD office.
How many people take part?
Eight at most. Ebru needs room at the tray and a hand nearby when you are learning, so the group stays small deliberately.
Can children or families join?
The December Christmas and New Year workshop is especially suited to families making seasonal decorations together. For the other sessions, write to us and we will advise on what suits.
Will the workshops continue after December?
Possibly. Depending on interest and the wider programme, Ebru workshops may run from January through June. Write to us if you would like to hear when the next dates are confirmed.

Žensko kulturno društvo Anatolija
The Ebru workshops are run in cooperation with ŽKD Anatolija, whose volunteers bring the practical knowledge of the craft to the table — the preparation of the water, the pigments and the tools that make marbling possible.
Their members also lead Ebru demonstrations at public events, including the Štruklji Fest, where visitors can try the art for themselves alongside our stand.
