Statehood day

Celebrating Statehood day in Slovenia – June 25th 2025

Today we celebrate Statehood Day, one of the most important days in the history of the Slovenian state. In 1991, Slovenia declared its independence and sovereignty on this very day. The day after, the Declaration of Independence of Slovenia and the Fundamental Constitutional Charter on the sovereignty and independence of Slovenia were ceremoniously proclaimed in Republic Square in Ljubljana.

Today, 34 years later, this national holiday, like every year, is a day off. Slovenians hang Slovenian flags on public institutions, residential buildings, and houses. The day before, a state celebration is held every year.

The holiday is not only a commemoration of a historical event but also an opportunity to reflect on the present and future. What does it mean to be sovereign today? What is the quality of democracy? Are we all equally heard in a society the Slovenian nation bravely chose in 1991?

May Statehood Day be a holiday of pride, reflection, and connection. Good luck, Slovenia! 🤍💙❤️
