SHARING AND CELEBRATING RAMADAN

What’s it all about?

Ramadan is the ninth month on the Islamic calendar. Muslims observe it worldwide, as a month of fasting (sawm), prayer (salah), reflection, and community. Fasting from dawn to sunset in Ramadan commemorates Prophet Muhammad’s first revelation of the Quran, and it is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam.

Breaking fast at Iftar dinners

Iftar is the first meal after sunset, when we break our daily fast. Inviting non-muslims from different cultural backgrounds to our iftars brings an excellent opportunity to have an open intercultural and interfaith dialogue.

Our activities in the month of Ramadan

  • intercultural socialising – small iftar dinners with host families
  • larger group iftar dinners
  • raising public awareness of Ramadan through posting articles
  • inviting media to our iftar dinners and sharing experiences of our guests

Open Iftar Dinners

For the past 5 years, we have been organizing open iftar dinners. Each year, number of events grows bigger and these gatherings have become our association’s tradition. What started out as a few dinners for a small number of guests in our volunteers’ homes, grew into an annual project of hosting events for larger groups at other associations.
