ASHURA – NOAH’S PUDDING
A CELEBRATION AND A DESSERT
The Intercultural Dialogue Association connects people from different cultural backgrounds and communities each year with the sweet turkish tradition of Noah’s pudding on the day of Ashura. This holiday has roots in all three Abrahamic religions: Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. In Islamic tradition, it marks the 10th day of the first Islamic month of Muharram, when Moses parted the Red Sea for the safe passage of his people. The word ashura comes from the Arabic language for the number 10.
On the 10th day, Noah and his family safely landed on Mount Ararat with the help of their ark. Turkish tradition commemorates this with a dessert called ashura, with which Noah’s family supposedly indulged long ago. This is why the Turks also call it Noah’s pudding.
Noah’s pudding is one of the oldest and most popular desserts in the world.

The MKD Association started sharing this sweet Turkish tradition in Slovenia two years ago. We organize gatherings outside the time window according to the Islamic calendar, as recently day of Ashura falls during the summer, when it is very hot and most of our friends are at the seaside or on vacation elsewhere. Therefore, we meet in the autumn months, when we begin a new season of the association’s activities.
We invite friends from different cultural backgrounds for a pleasant get-together. In addition to the intercultural exchange and Turkish tea, a dessert must not be missed – Noah’s pudding or ashure, prepared by our volunteers.
