New faces of Slovenia – Susana from Spain

NEW FACES OF SLOVENIA
Read Susana’s story.

I am Spanish, born in Madrid. For the last 11 years, I have lived in various places: London, Paris, Brussels, and now Ljubljana.

I feel like a citizen of Europe! I am a qualified lawyer and I currently work as a policy officer in a European Union agency dealing with energy in Ljubljana.

In Ljubljana, rents are high, and the city is not very well adapted for accommodating international nomads.

I left my country in search of better education and better job opportunities. I never intended to be gone for so long, but one thing led to another and I am still living abroad!

I was lucky to find a great job at a European Union agency, so everything went smoothly since I am Spanish and Slovenia is part of the EU. However, it would have been difficult for me to find a job in Slovenia if they required knowledge of the language. Slovenian is quite challenging to learn and is generally a barrier. We know that language is important for life in a country and also for work. Fortunately, at our workplace, we mostly work and speak in English. Otherwise, I don’t know any other way than that there will need to be more international jobs where English is spoken, as learning Slovenian for foreigners is not well organized here.

Besides work, I enjoy having time to enjoy the beautiful nature of this country. I can ski, hike in the mountains, swim in the lake, or for a day ride my bike from Ljubljana to the sea.

In Ljubljana, rents are high, and the city is not well adapted for accommodating international nomads. The city should have more user-friendly and easily accessible co-working spaces. This could attract more digital nomads or people competent in the field of information and digital technology.

Slovenia urgently needs individuals who can work in this area.

Let’s fight the stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination. Every individual deserves the opportunity to participate in society on an equal footing. Let’s stand together for a more inclusive and equitable future.
