The first week of Ramadan is behind us. This year as well, we continue our tradition of open iftars. We have already organized them at our Association’s premises, in the homes of our volunteers, at the premises of Socialna akademija and DRPD Novo mesto, and at a nearby farm, where the largest number of invited guests gathered, coming from as many as 18 countries.

We are pleased that our open iftar dinners are so popular, as each year we organize more events and invite a larger number of guests.

Open iftars during the month of Ramadan are an excellent opportunity for intercultural dialogue over delicious food, when at sunset it is time to break the daily fast.

The show is broadcasted on the national radio program Prvi RTV Slovenija. The program is intended for members of ethnic communities from the former Yugoslavia. Other listeners who want to spread their knowledge about these communities, are also welcome to tune in.

We invited Biljana Žikić, a Serbian journalist, researcher and president of the Serbian association Danilo Kiš to one of our open iftar dinners. She also prepares said radio program on a Slovene radio channel. She prepared this segment to introduce MKD, Ramadan, and our open iftar dinners.

In the interview, our active volunteer Azize from Turkey spoke about Ramadan and iftars by MKD. The segment also featured short statements by other guests. Slovenian, Bosnian and Palestinian participants who attended the iftar, joined in to share their feelings and experiences about iftar, Ramadan and our association.

Ramadan is the holy month of fasting for Muslims. Our Association for intercultural dialogue MKD is proud to share our iftar dinners have become an annual tradition by now. In our quarters and in homes of Turkish families, we host so called open iftars. To these festive dinners we invite our friends, coworkers and volunteers from other associations and institutions, with whom we collaborate all year long.

This year, we have also started gathering at sunset in the first week of Ramadan. At sundown, it is time to break the daily fast. Our guests join us for traditional Ramadan dishes. While sharing a delicious meal, there is plenty of time for pleasant intercultural exchange and conversation. Our guests from different cultural backgrounds happily chat with our volunteers and iftar hosts.

In the first week, we hosted representatives of the Belarusian diaspora in Slovenia and members of the Cultural Tourist Association Bazilika. We also invited members of the Danilo Kiš Cultural Centre and representatives of the United Nations Association for Slovenia.

At Radio Študent, we hosted an iftar dinner for the associates and volunteers of the radio station. We are proud to work with the radio team ourselves, as we prepare the monthly episodes of the radio show Enolončnica.

We hosted another iftar in one of our Turkish family’s home. We invited a representative from the Latino Association from Peru, an Egyptian architect, and a Slovenian-Serbian court translator.
